Blog for Week 6...

For this one find articles that relate to copyright issues in design, audio related when possible, but most issues of copyright adjust across the board of design.

Chris, this is not a question. It is a search criterion.

As usual, any other audio-related stuff you come across or I post for you are good sources to blog about,

for instance:

Off you go.

Mid-Term Quiz for Week 6
IM3307 Audio for Interactive
Instructor: Tim O’Donnell

Assignment: Building a glossary of interactive audio terms found on the web.

Description: Based on some weblinks I give you at the end of this assignment brief
(plus others you find on your own), create a comprehensive glossary of interactive audio terms.

The purpose of this assignment is to sift through the vast information out on the web and pulling only terms that are relative to the fields of interactive web design and game art and indexing them.

For example: Streaming Audio might be a good choice for our glossary, but Sub Woofer might not. It is up to each individual building their own glossary to decide.

Deliverables: Build the Glossary in a Word document and have it on the drop off at the top of class next week.

This exercise represents your Mid-Term quiz.

Ok for this week's blog I did a little research and looked at this from a few different angels.

The first article that I looked at was concerning the use of the apple logo by the beetles for their "apple corps" brand. Apple computer company and the Beetles both had the same logo because of an earlier contract. This doesn't have to do so much with audio, but it does have a lot to do with design, and how one logo can define many things easily but still be used to identify a single company. Whenever we see the "Macintosh Apple" we think apple computer not beetles music, ("Except Tim that is")

My second article is about Guitar Hero 3

Well if you buy guitar hero 3 for the Wii the box Says it comes with:
Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound,

well it does not. There is a lawsuit concerning this. Activision put the game out and they are the ones at the end of the proverbial shotgun on this one. It's amazing to think about really. The people are not suing because of the mis-leading label. They are suing because the "SOUND QUALITY IS NOT THERE". That is Crazy. To think someone actually took the time to see if there is mono or stereo sound through a TV is a little silly to me. But to each his own. Enjoy the reading!

Copyright issues can be either simple or complicated. The simple fact is that if you didn’t write it or make it, it does not belong to you. This article basically reiterated what I just stated over and over. When it comes to using/reusing someone else’s work, you should always have the integrity to ask them and get permission before taking the risk of copyright infringement. You can be taken to court for this. Although the copying of HTML code, JavaScript, etc. is very controversial in whether or not it is copyright and belonging to the writer, a code is a code, and sometimes there’s just no other way to do it.

Interesting about Guitar Hero 3. I didn't knew that... but then again.. I have the Guitar Hero 3 for PS3 and if you have a good sound system.. WOO WEE! is awesome!

But! Onto more important news. I actually found this article for the first blog that was posted and I decided to save it for a good day like this one!

Basically.. Sony BMG will sell music WITHOUT Copyright Protection! Crazy HUH!? Well! i bet you probably know this by now.. but I didn't! and apparently its been going on already.. Although this brings a good question.. so Does buying a song online.. gives you the right to do anything with it?

I don't know. Draw your own conclusions!

A little article about SWG (Star Wars Galaxies), a Massively Multiplayer Online Game, not allowing Players to compose and play their own music within the game world. This is true for any of these Online Games (or any game in general) due to the Copyrighting nightmare game developers would go through.

As stated previously in the blog about Guitar Hero, copyrighting is a huge issue and getting ahold of music from their artists to use in these type of games can cost a lot of cash.
